In three sentences, tell us what your work is about.
Black Mast is a creative outlet that pays tribute to our interests. Drag queens, pirates, ghosts, and spooky movies are our inspirations, and we top it off with a layer of campy humor. It's another way for us to break away from the day-to-day routines and stay creatively energized!
How did you first find out about zines? What inspired you to make your own zines?
I came to learn about zines through my interest in comic books. I had been drawing my own since I was little, but didn't know there was a whole community of self-publishers out there until high school! A desire to tell my own stories lead me to making zines and comics.
What do you do when you’re not creating?
Brandon is a Marketing Designer at Indiegogo, and Marie is a Product Support Specialist at BrightRoll. Outside of work and creating, we tend to frequently haunt spots in the Mission like El Rio and Virgil's, as well as attending drag shows at the Stud in SOMA and the Cafe in Castro!
What is an unexpected benefit that you’ve experienced from reading/ making zines?
Making new friends through shared interests, and supporting local creators!
How would you advise first timers on making their first zines?
I would say if you have an idea, GO FOR IT, make time for it, and follow it through! There's nothing like assembling printed pages for that final product. It's extremely gratifying!
What are you working on for this year’s SF Zine Fest?
We have a short illustrated spooky story and a draq queen photo diary zine that will be available! We will also have a couple fun new t-shirts and screenprinted notebooks available!
