Zine Fest Day 1!

Wow, the big day is here! Come join us at the SF County Fair BLDG all day from 11-6 to meet over 100 zinesters, cartoonists, printmakers, and other DIY creators... From the political to the personal, from tear-jerking tales to hilarious comic strips, from the arty to the earnest, we've got a bit of something for everyone!

Today's workshops and panels:

Q + A with Artnoose
• 12:30 – 1:20
An interview/presentation with Special Guest Artnoose. A slide show of her work and an audience Q + A will be included.

No, You Do It: Spotlight on Jesse Reklaw
• 1:30 – 2:20
Special Guest Jesse Reklaw unveils his new publishing ethos of NYDI: "No, You Do It." Chronicling 20 years of experience with publishing, from photocopied zines to hardback books by "real" publishers, Jesse shares what he learned along the way about the business and theory of publishing; working with editors, distributors, and agents; new formats like websites, e-books, and print-on-demand; as well as the history of publishing and some thoughts about its future. Audience Q+A to follow.

Punk Tabloid Panel
• 2:30 – 3:20
In conjunction with the SFZF's first-ever art exhibition, the panel for "Punk Tabloid" will feature creators V. Vale (Search & Destroy) and John Gullak (Another Room Magazine). Moderated by Matt Wobensmith of Goteblüd, this panel discussion will focus on the history of these late 70s Bay Area large format zines, as well as the environment and process that produced them.

DIY Screenprinting
• 3:30 – 4:45
Always a Zine Fest favorite! Learn the basics of screenprinting in this hands-on workshop. Discussion will include printing, screen construction, screen mesh, squeegee hardness, types of ink, emulsion coating and removal, and exposure of positive image. Students will also get the chance to pull prints from screens with pre-burned designs (bring clothes, paper, or any flat surface you would like the screenprint onto)! All inks, squeegees, and screens will be provided.

Come out after the first day of the Zine Fest to relax, converse, and imbibe a few beverages with other DIY fans and creators. Reconnect with old friends and meet new ones, and recharge and get pumped for day two of the Fest!

SFZF After- Afterparty

Saturday, September 4, 9 pm - 2 am - The Knockout

$5 cover, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the SF Zine Fest! FREE with Flannel or Baby Doll Dress before 11. FREE with zines to trade all night!

But wait, there's more! Once you are nice and relaxed from chatting with your pals at the SFZF Afterparty, then it's high time for the SFZF After-Afterparty! Our pals at 90s music club Debaser will be hosting the SFZF faithful finto the wee hours. DJs Jamie Jams and Emdee play classic indie, underground and riot grrrl jams to get you in the mood to read zines & comix (or even to crowd surf and mosh!). Consistently one of the best music nights in the city!
