SFZF 2022 presents our annual Thinking Captions Zine Reading! In-person at @silversprocket on Saturday, August 27, 6-7 p.m.

You'll get to experience zines in vivid detail, read aloud by their creators: our SFZF 2022 Guest of Honor, Avy Jetter and her 3 featured guests Ajuan Mance, Robert Trujillo, and Malcolm Johnson.

We're back in-person for our annual SFZF Kick-off Party at Mission: Comics & Art! on Saturday, Sept. 3 from 6-9 p.m.! instagram.com/missioncomics

  • Everyone is welcome! Exhibitors, volunteers, people who plan to attend SFZF or can't make it, people who just love zines

  • Meet zine lovers before the fest

  • Support a great local comix shop (free entry but plz consider buying something to support them!)

We love how this event helps out-of-town exhibitors establish some familiar faces before the fest, we love meeting our new volunteers, we love being able to feed people who are making SF Zine Fest happen, & we love meeting zinesters always!

Screen Printing with Print.Organize.Protest

Screenprint t-shirts posters and signs of resistance & empowerment. Print.Organize.Protest will provide designs from artists in the community and equipment for public use, YOU come and print them. Paper & fabric will be provided, participants are encouraged to bring clothing and other materials to print on.

This year in addition to printing stations with pre-made designs Print.Organize.Protest will also have a hands-on paper stencil making demo and some participants will then have an opportunity to cut their own paper stencil to print from 1-3pm.

Tiny Splendor: “We are excited to bring a Risograph to SFZF! Stop by with your artwork and we will make 10 prints in two colors for you free of charge! Bring a digital file or an original piece to print from. We will print as much as we can between 12-4pm!”

Tiny Splendor began in 2012 in Berkeley, California self-publishing zines and prints in our small apartment. Started by Cynthia Navarro, Kenneth Srivijittakar, Max Stadnik, and Sanaa Khan, it has since expanded into a riso press in Los Angeles and a community print shop in Berkeley. We strive to offer affordable access to all of our printmaking resources and to establish accessibility to the arts and freedom of the press.

Join us for a conversation with Gaia WXYZ, Maia Kobabe, MariNaomi, and Ajuan Mance as we discuss a range of topics from book banning to queer identities to providing resources.

Gaia WXYZ @gaiaw.xyz (pronounced “wize”) is a multimedia creator who specializes in visual art, specifically comics, illustration, painting and design. They write & draw autobiographical comics about being Black and Queer. Since an early age, art has been the major motivating force in their life, concocting characters and storylines in sketchbooks. Though they have skills in a variety of media, including printmaking, sculpture, photography, installation and performance art, Gaia has focused their talent to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming an arts educator, teaching the first ever classes on comic art at UC Berkeley.

Maia Kobabe is the author and illustrator of GENDER QUEER: A MEMOIR, which won a Stonewall Honor and an Alex Award from the American Library Association in 2020. It was also the number one most challenged book in the US in 2021. Maia's short comics have been published by The New Yorker, The Nib, The Washington Post and in many print anthologies.

Ajuan Mance is a Professor of English at Mills College and an instructor in the Illustration and Comics programs at California College of Art. Their illustrations and comics have appeared in several collections including: We’re Still Here, winner of the 2019 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Anthology; Drawing Power, winner of the 2020 Eisner Award for Best Anthology; Menopause: A Comic Treatment, winner of the 2021 Eisner Award for Best Anthology; She Votes, from Chronicle Books; COVID Chronicles: A Comics Anthology, and others. Ajuan is the author and illustrator of the upcoming Living While Black: Portraits of Everyday Resistance. This summer, their 1001 Black Men online sketchbook project was released in book form as 1001 Black Men: Portraits of Masculinity at the Intersections, from Stacked Deck Press.

Avy has been an incredible force in the Bay Area zine and comics community for many years, so we’re humbled to announce Avy Jetter as our Guest of Honor for the 21st Annual San Francisco Zine Fest.

Avy will present her work and during our interview, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about her achievements.
